Celebrating 10 years as one of SoCal?s finest funk
?n? soul units, THE WISE MONKEY
ORCHESTRA naturally felt a live album was in
order: The smoke and sweat-filled They Live
(Lauan Records) tops off the 20,000 copies sold
of their previous four studio albums, highlighting
a serious group of musicians and one powerhouse
diva in bombshell singer Alley. The
horns-and-bottom-end-driven WMO may be
capable of some high-octane noodling, but don?t
ever call ?em a ?jam? band. ?I?d gone to a lot of
Dead shows and thought, ?You know, this is
really good acid, but they still sound like shit,??
Alley laughs of the hippie-twirl set. ?C?mon
folks, don?t you think it?s a little late? Now
they?re trying to do it with Phish, following them
around and doing ?I need a miracle.? I mean, come
on people?get a job.? You go, girl. The Wise
